Mitigating the risk of hospitalization on older adults, autoethnography as methodology and method, risk, discourse analysis, community health workers engagement and education.

Courses & Teaching

Mary serves as a graduate supervisor and field guide for graduate students interested in clinical nurse specialist advanced practice roles specifically focused on older adults. She has also served as a sessional instructor for the Faculty of Health and Social Development.

Biography

Mary Kjorven is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in gerontology and Nurse Continence Advisor with Interior Health. Her background is acute care and her passion is older adults and building capacity in health care teams to provide better care for this very vulnerable population.

She has specific clinical and research expertise in geriatric syndromes including delirium and incontinence as well as experience in health care regulation, unregulated health care providers and advanced practice nursing roles. Mary served on the BC nursing regulatory Board from 2011-2017, as Chair of that Board from 2013-2017 and on the Transition Steering Committee, which successfully brought together Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Licensed Practical Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses for one nursing regulator.

Her research and scholarly activity includes delirium, older adults’ perceptions of risk, continence, geriatric education and training in acute care and more recently, community health worker engagement and education.
